Behind the scenes of The National Lottery
Name: Jenny
Role: Retail
Director Location: Watford
Time at Camelot: 18 months +
What's your Camelot story?
I joined Camelot in September 2017. I was drawn to the incredible purpose of the organisation, as well as having the chance to work with brands of such scale. For me it was also a change of industry which I was keen to gain for my own personal development too. From the moment I had contact with Camelot I knew it was a special place and could offer me a great career.
What does your current role entail?
I am the newly appointed Retail Director and my role is focused on setting & delivering the strategy & KPIs for Camelot’s retail business by leading the 3 teams that make up Retail here at Camelot: National Accounts, Field Sales & Retail Operations.
The National Lottery is sold in over 44,000 outlets and the focus of my role is to ensure we maintain this, as well as grow sales (& therefore good causes) via driving play in retail. Retail is fast moving and is constantly changing, so a big part of the role is ensuring we keep pace with that here at Camelot and continue to meet both our player’s and retailer’s needs. And all whilst ensuring we are operating to the highest levels of integrity, with responsible retailing at the heart of any decisions made.
What skills help you succeed in this role?
Being able to work cross-functionally is a must! Retail can’t and won’t deliver by working in isolation and I love that element of my role. Listening skills are also essential. It’s great to have a clear idea of what you want but with a team of 160 and many other trusted colleagues across the business, it is key that you take time out to listen and hear what others think too. And finally, I could not do my job if I was not comfortable in making decisions and getting things done. Retail is fast paced and that’s often how we need to act too.
What's the best part of your job?
Seeing the results come in off the back of immense hard work from the teams. It is so rewarding to know that when we grow sales, we grow good cause contributions and therefore change lives.
What has been your Camelot highlight?
The breadth of what I have been able to get involved in. We are a big business in terms of scale but there are just over 900 employees delivering over £7bn in sales. I feel I am constantly learning and getting involved in new thinking & projects - this is just so rewarding for my own personal development.
If I had to call out one highlight though, it would have to be my appointment to the role of Retail Director. It is a total privilege to be asked to lead such a key team here at Camelot and I have every confidence we’ll make 19/20 a really special year.
If you didn't work at Camelot, what would be your dream job?
I love the idea of being able to invest and do up properties, although I am sure it is not quite as glamorous as it can often look on TV!
Also I would volunteer for the Kidney Foundation as that’s a cause very dear to my family.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I do Pilates once a week which is my sanity on a Tuesday evening! I also like to dabble in running but nothing too serious on that front.
And of course how can I not mention the fact that I LOVE to spend time with my husband and 3 children. We are very fortunate to have such a brilliant group of local friends that we have met through having a family and weekends are often spent with them.
Oh..can I also mention a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc is one of my pleasures too?!
