A few of us from the HR team were eager to use one of our two annual volunteer days, so we jumped at the chance to spend the day helping out at Watford Peace Hospice. As a small team of 5, we were given the rare opportunity to spend the morning with some of the outpatients in the Starlight lounge. This involved chatting to the patients and joining in with solving word puzzles, a round of chair-based exercises, a quick game of catch and helping out with some arts and crafts. Mike from the Recruitment team was beaten at a game of dominoes and Helen was told that she was too loud when chatting about Love Island (which we all agreed was true!). It was a really rewarding morning for all involved and it was great for the team to get to meet some of the patients who benefit from the amazing services offered by the Peace Hospice.

The afternoon was spent testing hundreds of battery powered tea light candles and putting together fundraising packs for the upcoming Night Light Walk event. The Night Light Walk is a great opportunity to raise valuable funds for the Hospice and the packs are really important to help boost brand awareness and essential for the participants to start getting sponsorship.

Our team of volunteers enabled the packs to be made up on time and meant that the fundraisers will have everything they need for the big night. It may seem like a small task but it makes a huge difference to the hospice who rely on the support of volunteers across all areas of the organisation.

To end the day, we were given a tour of the hospice where we learnt more about the important services and care offered there, as well as how crucial fundraising is to keep the hospice going.

It was another fantastic volunteering day that not only supported one of our local charity partners but also allowed us to spend time together away from the office and helped us feel more connected to our purpose and the Good Causes we support. This is what some of the volunteers had to say:

“We’re really passionate about connecting with the local community and the hospice offers an invaluable service so it’s fantastic to be able to help out in any small way that we can” Mel, HR Operations & Vetting Administrator

"I’ve really enjoyed volunteering today, it’s nice to get out of the office and do something a bit different, we’ve met some truly lovely people” Paula, Resourcing Advisor

"A hugely rewarding and inspiring day, great to see a National Lottery funded project that makes such a huge difference to peoples lives" Helen, Resourcing Business Partner
